Electricians can only carry out work in NSW if they have an electrical licence.

What is electrical work?

According to the Home Building Act 1989, electrical wiring work refers to the actual physical work that involves installation, repair, alteration, removal, addition or supervision of the work.

On the other hand, electrical installation refers to any fixed appliances, fittings, wires or other electrical equipment for control, use and conveyance of electricity within in a specific place.

What qualifications does a licensed Sydney electrician need?

If you will be hiring an electrician then look for the following qualifications:

Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician (UEE30806 or UEE30807 or UEE30811) with Certificate of proficiency as an Electrician or an Electrical Mechanic from the Department of Education and Communities (DEC) or the Vocational Training Tribunal (VTT) and at least 12 months relevant electrical wiring work experience.

Experience also include understanding and knowledge of AS/NZS 3000:2007 in the residential, commercial and/or industrial areas under the NSW Fair Trading ‘Referee’s Statement Electrical Work’.

What happens if someone carries out work with a licence?

Electricians that carry out work without a licence can be fined up to $22,000 as an individual or $110,000 as a company.

To make sure that accidents are avoided as much as possible, the electrician should be fully equipped. Some things to look out for include:
