Take care of your solar panels says Paul!
According to the National Fire Department statistics, there is an increase in Solar Panel fires!
This makes getting your solar systems checked, cleaned and serviced regularly at top priority. Without proper maintenance, you may be at risk of fire damage.
Paul Edelman, our Top 3 business pick electrician based on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, tells us more.
Why do solar panel fires happen?
According to Paul, some causes of solar panel fires include:
- Cheap and badly installed systems
- Possums or birds
According to Paul: “Badly installed systems are generally the cause of Solar panel fires. Poorly trained solar installers often doing it on the cheap using imported products.” He also recommends regular system check to see if the panels need cleaning or replacement because of corrosion or deterioration.
Paul also adds that: “Possums or birds can nest under the panels and the leaves and debris are a fire hazard, they can also damage wiring and cause a short circuit or hot joint causing fire.”
Should you clean solar panels on your own?
While cleaning solar panels can increase output up to 30%, Paul cautions against cleaning panels on your own. According to him:
- Mixing water and power can be dangerous
- Working on a rooftop can be dangerous without the correct equipment
- It is possible to “disconnect” or damage wiring to and from your solar panels
It is best to call an experienced electrician with solar systems to do this.
