Don’t take the risk on an unlicensed Sydney electrician!

Whether it’d be for your home or business, you’ll likely end up needing an electrician at one point.

However, to make sure that nothing goes wrong, it’s best that you hire a licensed Sydney electrician. In fact, under NSW laws, all electrical works must be carried out by a fully licensed electrician. No excuses!

So how do you know if your electrician is licensed?

Checking your Sydney electrician is licensed:

1. Start with the NSW Fair Trading website

The fastest way to know whether your electrician has a valid licence or not is to check it online. On the NSW Fair Trading website, you can check the electrician’s full name and licence number for validity.

You can also check specifically for the suburbs and post codes including when they got their licence and when the validity period will end.

2. Type of electrical work needing a licence

Electricians need to secure an electrical licence before they can carry out any electrical wiring work. This is also regardless of the cost or whether it would be industrial, residential or commercial.

According to the NSW Fair Trading website, electrical wiring work refers to actual repair, alteration, installation, addition or removal of an electrical component or system.

Electrical installation, on the other hand, means wires, fixed appliances, apparatus, fitting or other electrical equipment that can control, carry and allow the use of electricity.

Make sure that the electrician you hire has a licence to carry out the services as related to the legal definitions of what electrical work is.

3. Check with the electricians’ insurance company

Insurance companies evaluate and check their applicants. They don’t just give out coverage plans without ensuring that the person or the business is legitimate.

If your electrician has a valid insurance policy then this proves they are also certified in carrying out their offered services. This serves as your double filter. So simply ask them for a copy of their latest insurance policy.

4. Research the electrician online

Most licensed electricians will have a legitimate online profile. Check their website including customer testimonials. You’ll find a lot of information on their website and social media pages.

Just by searching the name of the Sydney electrical business online, you’ll also find out whether there are any talks about them in forums or social media sites.

The internet is powerful and it’ll only take you a few minutes to check and put your mind at ease. Who know what you will discover, good, bad or otherwise.
