Finding a licensed Sydney plumber
The last thing you need are pipes bursting or drains clogging in your home. If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of fixing your pipes and drains then get a good Sydney plumber to help. But here is the thing you need to watch out for – not every plumber is licensed. Scary I know and it’s probably something you tend to “just assume.” We say, never “just assume” and always check.
So, where do you start?
1. Check the plumber out online
In NSW, a plumber must have a licence. These include any plumbing, gasfitting or draining works. This is also regardless of the nature of work (residential, commercial or commercial) and cost. It doesn’t take much to check a Sydney plumber’s licence because you can do this online. You can do that in the comfort of your own home by getting on to the NSW Fair Trading and doing a direct check. You would need to know the plumber’s licence number or full name to check this.
2. What to look for in a plumber licence
Once you get the licence, look for the following things:
- licencee name
- licence number
- trade
- suburb
- licence start date and end date
You want to make sure that the licence is still valid. It’s also a good sign if they have had the licence for a good number of years. The longer the better.
3. Review compliance issues
What we love about the NSW Fair Trading Website and Contractor Licence Check section is that it tells you if the plumber has been “in trouble”. There is a “compliance” section which will list things like public warnings made, statutory and insurance claim.
4. Check the history of the plumber
NSW Fair Trading also provides a full history of the licence of the plumber, including periods the licence was not valid, cancelled, changed etc. It’s really worth checking out so that you can find a “clean” plumber.
5. “Google” the plumber
Now who doesn’t Google everyone and everything? You’ll be surprised at what good, bad or “strange” things you will find when you Google a plumber by their personal name or business name.
