Planning on Getting A New Sydney Deck?

There is no doubt that a quality Sydney decks can transform your external living space.

If you want to make sure that everything goes right with your project then you need to hire the right experienced Sydney deck builder. If you don’t, you risk losing money, getting stressed or, worse still, a poor quality deck job.

Selecting the right deck builder is a matter of doing good research and always asking the right questions.

Questions To Ask A Sydney Deck Builder

  1. Do you specialise in decks?

Not every Sydney builder, carpenter or handyman specialise in deck work so it’s actually a very important question to ask.

Ask for their portfolio and related experience to be sure they’re telling the truth.

  1. Do you have a licence?

This question will depend on the size of your deck job.

In Sydney and NSW, jobs less than $5,000 do not require a license.

Personally though, if a tradesperson is a professional and experienced deck builder, than I would expect him/her to carry a licence regardless of the value of the job. They should most likely hold either a builders or carpentry licence.

By selecting a non-licensed deck builder, you run the risk they are not fully experienced in the profession.

  1. Is the deck contract more than $20,000?

NSW Fair Trading imposes several things for home building contracts that go beyond $20,000. For instance, both parties should be given enough time to review the contract before signing. Some of the concerns you should be checking as a homeowner include builder licence, all work stated in a written contract, deposit and construction payments specified etc.

Take a good look at the requirements governing contracts more than $20,000.

  1. What will the deck cost?

Home deck costs vary depending on the material to be used, its size and whether it requires roofing.

A deck can start from just a few thousands to over $50,000.

A great deck builder will understand what you need, including your budget and help you achieve a design and functional deck within that.

  1. Does my deck need council approval?

Council provisions govern how homes should be constructed in Australia.

Check with your local Council whether your planned deck addition requires any approvals or if there are restrictions with what you can build.

It may depend on the size of the deck being constructed.

A local Sydney architect or draftsperson will be able to guide you through this process.
