The economic times we’re living in are pretty tough. Everyone is affected by the unstable economic climate, regardless of their status in life. Of course, we always do our best to adjust, and what better way to start adjusting to tough economic times than to cut back and save money whenever we can?
Then again, we all need to realise that we have to make certain sacrifices if we want to save money. Just keep in mind that these sacrifices are going to save you thousands of dollars in the long run.
To get you started, here are some ideas on how to save more money at home.
Save money
Can you think of a better way to save money than actually setting aside and saving money? How much you’ll be saving will entirely be up to you though. You can allocate a significant portion of your income for a bank account, or you can collect all the loose change you have lying around and put them in a piggy bank. If you make this a lifelong habit, you will certainly be in for a surprise when the money grows over the years, without you even noticing.
Drop the expensive habits
Do you eat out all the time? Do you buy smartphones with every single update? Eating at home will always be less costly. As for your smartphones, as long as they continue to serve your purposes effectively, hold on to them. Just let go of expensive stuff like the ones mentioned above, and you’ll be able to save money.
De-clutter
Why would cleaning up and organising your stuff save money? That’s because with all the stuff you have, there will always be times when you buy something you already have, but forgot about it because it’s under a mountain of debris, so to speak. This has happened to me before, particularly when it comes to clothes, DVDs, games and certain appliances. When you organise at home, you can avoid buying multiples of the same thing, and avoid throwing money away at the same time.
Rent, don’t buy
With the skyrocketing costs of books, DVDs and other entertainment stuff, renting becomes a much wiser option. After all, you’re likely to enjoy them just once, so why saddle yourself with a huge purchase when you can just rent—even borrow—entertainment stuff?
Houseplants as air filters
So you keep the air in your home clean by buying expensive air purifier or filters on a regular basis. Would you want a less expensive option for removing toxins from your air and keeping your air fresh? Try introducing houseplants to your home. They can do the exact same job, but without the hefty price tag.
Dispose of disposables
Are you in the habit of buying paper towels all the time? You can save money by disposing of this habit, and use washable cloths or old clothes for wiping down surfaces instead.
Get an energy audit done
With an energy audit, you can identify specific improvements you can make around the house to make it more energy efficient and save money in the long run. You will be able to know if your property needs better insulation, or if your dryer uses so much power that line drying your laundry when the weather allows becomes a much better option.
Chuck brand names
Many among us are just too fussy about brands for our own good. While it’s OK if you can afford it, sticking to big brands is a bit foolhardy when you are trying to save money. Just let go of the product snobbery and buy generic brands which are, more often than not, just as good as the big-name brands.
Collect coupons
You might have some certain preconceived notions about people who use coupons, but you need to forget about them if you want to save some money. There are coupons for just about everything these days. Save them and use them whenever you can and you will be saving a lot in the long run.
Pay your bills promptly
People who pay their bills on time or ahead of time are usually spared from late payment fees, surcharges or any kind of penalties that companies could think of just to squeeze a few more dollars off of you. Don’t give them that pleasure by paying your bills promptly, and save money in the process.
