Planning is a must when moving to a new home
House relocations and moves can be extremely stressful, especially if you do not spend a little time deciding on what types of services are needed and creating a comprehensive plan for moving house.
However, if you spend a little time being organised and creating a plan, you will be surprised how smoothly your relocation can go. We have put together some ideas to help you create a moving list and ensure everything goes as smoothly as possible on moving day.
Pick your moving date
Obviously, one of the first steps when moving is to pick the date. Once you know your moving day, you can work backward to develop your entire plan.
Book removalists and any other services
If you are planning to have professional help with your move, you will need to research and book your removalists. It is a good idea to talk to, and get quotes from at least three different companies so that you can find one who is best suited to your specific needs.
Conduct an inventory of your belongings
Adding a complete inventory of your belongings to your moving list will help to ensure you are organised. In addition, it is a great thing to have for insurance reasons.
Gather your packing materials and begin packing
By this time, you should be ready to begin packing, which means you will need boxes, labels, packing tape, and paper or Bubble Wrap for padding. Once you have plenty of packing materials you should begin to pack your home ready for the move. Remember to pack non-essential items first, leaving the items you use most often until closer to the move. While packing, make sure that all boxes are well organised, colour coded, and labelled to make it easier for the removalists to load, transport and unload your belongings.
Decide where things go
If you have a floor plan of your new home, or remember the layout of the property, take a little time to plan where all of your furniture and larger belongings will go. If you have a clear diagram of where everything should be placed, you will not have to worry about everything being placed in one or two rooms and having to rearrange yourself, once the removalists have finished.
Don’t forget rubbish removal and utility transfers
One thing that many people seem to forget when moving house is to schedule rubbish removal shortly after they have moved.
When you pack, it is quite normal to generate a lot of rubbish as you find things that are broken or that you don’t want or need anymore. Contact the local council and ask about scheduling a hard waste removal pick up. If you do not want to wait, or no rubbish removal services are available, you can hire or borrow a trailer and haul the rubbish to the local landfill or dump, or arrange for a large trash bin known as a skip to be delivered and then taken away again once you have filled it.
It is also important to remember to have your utilities transferred from your existing home to your new one. Contact your service provider and let them know your move date. They can ensure that services are turned on and ready in your new home before they are turned off in your old one.
