Helpful tips for moving house

Regardless of whether you are moving to a rental house or have just purchased your dream home, moving house can be a stressful experience, especially if you are moving with children or pets. However, with some careful planning and preparation, moving day can be organised and stress-free. Below are some great tips for moving house that can help you stay on track.

Before the move

One of the first things you should do as early as possible before the move is to decide whether you are going to do it yourself or use a removalist. If you plan to use a removalist, you can find some of the best local businesses in a business directory. Alternatively, you could contact one or more recommended businesses if friends, family members, or neighbours have told you about any they feel are good. If you do choose to hire a removalist, find out whether they provide your moving supplies and pack for you, or if you have to provide your own supplies and pack yourself.

Once you have found the removalist you want to use, book their services in plenty of time and pay any deposits they may require. Additional things to take care of before the move include:

  • Book time off work
  • Re-evaluate your home insurance
  • Start collecting moving supplies if the removalist doesn’t supply them
  • Create a list of everyone you will need to notify of the move
  • Begin to organise and declutter your home. Any items you don’t want that are in good condition can be given to a charity or sold.
  • If you plan to hire a cleaning company to clean your old house, book them early to ensure they are available when you need them.

Packing

You should begin packing as early as possible. It is a good idea to try to pack at least one box a day for the month prior to the move. Remember to label each box with what is inside and where it should go, the more information you put on the outside of the box, the easier it will be when you move. Valuables can be wrapped in towels, clothes, and linens, this will also reduce the number of boxes you should need. Remember to not overload the boxes so that they are not too heavy to carry.

Moving day

Whether you are moving or using a removalist, make sure that you are ready to go. If you are using a removalist, you will simply have to supervise and get yourself and your family to your new home.

If you are moving, pack large items in the truck first and use smaller items to fill gaps. Ensure necessities such as medicines, personal items, and toiletries are within easy reach and make sure you have healthy snacks to keep your energy up.

Moving with children or pets

Moving with children and/or pets can be very stressful. It may be easier on you and them if you find a babysitter or pet sitter who can take care of them while you move. You can find both in many good local business directories.

Don’t forget

Make sure that you do not forget to have the electricity, gas, water, and other utilities such as telephone, cable or satellite television, and Internet disconnected at your old house and reconnected at your new house. Additionally, you may want to consider having the locks changed on the new house to ensure that any previous homeowner or tenant cannot use any old keys they may have.
