We have always put an emphasis on keeping your home well-lighted, and there’s no better light to have plenty of in your home than natural light. Natural light offers a laundry list of benefits, from reducing electricity costs to keeping your home looking and smelling fresh with all that sunlight streaming indoors. Many may not know this, but natural light also helps people deal with mood disorders. Even more importantly, your immune system can get a boost with natural light.

What we’re trying to say here is that with all its accompanying benefits, we all should do whatever we can to maximise natural light in our home. If your home is low on natural light, here are some tips on how to give your home a much-needed boost of natural light.

1. Just let the natural light in

Most homes have window treatments of their own, but most of these treatments tend to block sunlight. Thick drapes and roller blinds practically prevent more natural light from coming into your home. For more natural light, just draw the drapes back during the day. There are also translucent shades that allow more light in but let you maintain privacy.

2. Put up mirrors

This is a rather obvious solution, as mirrors reflect light. Your choices would be to put up mirrors right beside a window or directly opposite it. A mirror placed beside a window will make it seem like you have more windows. On the other hand, placing the mirror opposite a window will reflect any light and views that enter through it.

3. Incorporate reflective materials into your home

Mirrors are reflective, but they’re just one item in a list of materials that are good at reflecting light. Incorporating reflective materials like steel, metallic paint, glass, chrome, porcelain and crystal into any given room can brighten up a room and give the illusion of a much larger space.

4. Keep your glass windows and doors clean

To let in more light, it’s absolutely important to keep your glass windows and doors clean all the time. And by cleaning, we mean thoroughly removing all the dirt inside and out. Many homeowners tend to forget to wash the exterior side of the windows and doors. With clean windows and doors, your room will have a bright, fresh and crisp look brought about by more natural light.

5. Ceilings a little lighter than walls

Ceilings should always be a bit lighter than the walls, particularly when the walls are of a dark colour. It doesn’t have to be white though, because that would be in sharp contrast to the rest of the house. Flat white ceilings should only be done when the walls are white as well. For better performance at reflecting light, we recommend matte paint for your ceiling.

5. Increase natural light with structural changes

One of the best, if not the best way of maximising natural light in your home is to make some structural changes. You can add skylights, solar light or skytubes, all of which increase natural light and lower your energy bills. In theory, you can put skylights anywhere you want, but they are more ideally installed infrequently used rooms like bathrooms.
