Manage a hassle-free move!

Moving from one home to another requires a considerable amount of planning and organisation. You need to coordinate not just the packing of items but also the change of address and the physical move itself.

We created a checklist to help you get prepared with the perfect move.

  1.    Choose a removalist company wisely

Packing and accounting for all your items can take time and effort so you should select a reputable home removals company well ahead of time. Price is not everything. Research their track record, experience and even ask for references. Ask if they provide insurance cover so that if any damage occurs during the move, you are protected.

Notify them of your exact move date and then plan a packing schedule based on that.

Take the time to go through all your items and belongings and dispose (or give-away) anything that is worn, old or no longer needed. This will help you save on moving costs and effort. As much as possible see to it you packed everything a few days ahead of moving.

  1.    Change of address time

You have to change all the addresses with your service providers and authorities. These include your gas and water bills, workplace, insurance company, Road and Traffic Authority (RTA), schools and universities, membership subscriptions, banks and credit card companies etc. Make a list of all the suppliers and authorities you need to notify ahead of time and plan a date to make the notification.

Don’t forget to contact your financial planner and accountant so they can also make any other notifications on your behalf like your superannuation fund, ATO and other.

It may be well worth setting up a short term mail re-direction with your local post office in case some notifications get missed.

  1.    Insurance policies changes

Consult your local insurance broker on how your current plan will be affected upon moving. Will it go up, down or stay the same? You will need to cancel any existing insurances on the old property and set up new ones at your changed address. The building and content values may change so make sure you have the conversation with your broker about this and ensure you are comfortable with the new insured values.
