There is hope for small kitchens

We all want a huge and spacious kitchen to cook and eat in, gather with friends and family in and style any way we want, but not all of us are that lucky. Then again, even if our kitchens our small, we can still make them as stylish as they are functional. Here are some ideas to make your small kitchen functional and stylish.

make your small kitchen functional and stylish

1. Make things light

A kitchen that is painted in light colours, with walls that blend into the cabinetry can create illusion of more space. To make the kitchen look even brighter and free-flowing, let natural light in.

2. Organise your kitchen

With such a small space, it is of paramount importance that you organise your kitchen. There has to be a place for everything, and everything should be in its proper place, so to speak. To organise your kitchen is to have a tidier and more efficient kitchen.

3. Store things up high

Your kitchen may be small in terms of floor area, but it’s highly likely that your walls are high. If that is the case, then use that space by putting up cabinets or open shelves that you can store stuff in. If you think you’d be too lazy to use a stepladder every time you want to get something, then make sure that you place things you know you will frequently need in the lower parts of the shelves or cabinets, where they would be easier to get to without using a stepladder.

4. Keep everything streamlined along one wall

A narrow kitchen will look so much cleaner when everything is placed right along one wall. Do this as you organise your kitchen.

5. Create illusion of more space with open shelving

Cabinets are fine, but for a small kitchen, open shelves more preferable, if only for the fact that they can create the illusion of more space. You can install these shelves at bench height, or you can put them up somewhere higher. The downside to this, however, is that you will have to dust more often.

6. Use stools or armless chairs

If your kitchen has a table, it would be smarter to choose armless chairs or even stools. First of all, they don’t take up much space; Secondly, they can be pushed under the table and kept out of sight; and thirdly, they help create cleaner lines in the kitchen.

7. Use the walls for storage

If your kitchen has walls that don’t have cabinets or shelves, they can be used for storage as well. Your kitchen wall is perfect for hanging pots, pans and other kitchen tools that you use on a regular basis.

8. Use decorative food containers

You can add a little more spice to your small kitchen by using cute little tins for your spices. Your staples, meanwhile, could be put into decorative canisters. When kitchen goods are in containers that are pleasing to eyes, there’s no need to keep them hidden anywhere out of reach, therefore making your cooking a whole lot easier.

Hopefully, the preceding tips can help you can make your small kitchen functional and stylish at the same time. With a little creativity, you can make the most out of that kitchen, regardless of its size.
